Tips for New Chemotherapy Patients

Preparing for your first infusion

Beginning treatment for cancer can be overwhelming and it’s normal to feel stress or anxiety before your first appointment. Our goal is to help ease your worries, so we’ve put together some simple tips to help you prepare for your first infusion.

Comfort is key.

Chemotherapy infusion can take time, so you’ll want to dress comfortably. Wear loose clothing and make sure your shirt allows access for the IV. Feel free to bring a blanket, sweater or travel pillow.

It’s OK to eat.

If you’re not fasting for a CT scan and you feel well enough, it’s perfectly fine to eat before and/or during your infusion. We offer light refreshments, but you’re welcome to bring your own food as well. We do recommend that you avoid foods with strong odors as chemotherapy can increase sensitivity to smell.

Bring entertainment.

A big part of a chemotherapy infusion is waiting. Bring a book, your favorite magazine, a tablet or your laptop (we offer free wifi). Headphones are also a good idea so you can tune out and rest.

On going home.

Make sure to follow the instructions you’re given. It’s especially important to stay hydrated and to rest when you are tired. Keep track of any side effects you experience and report them to you doctor or nurse. If you experience severe side effects, do not hesitate to call our office at 732-840-8880.
